چکیده

This paper presents the research framework for a new project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, called DEGEN (Data Enrichment for automated map GENeralisation) which supports two PhD projects. With a focus on thematic cartography (GIS maps, web mapping, location-based services) and the data types prevailing in these map types (polygonal subdivisons, points of interest, etc.), the project aims at developing methods for enriching cartographic databases as well as representing multiscale data of several levels of details (LODs) in multiresolution databases (MRDB). The key working hypothesis is that more adaptive real-time generalisation can be achieved by integrating generalisation methods with MRDB, and particularly by exploiting so-called horizontal and vertical relations. Horizontal relations describe patterns at a particular LOD (e.g. clusters, alignments), while vertical relations are described by links that associate homologous objects or patterns across two or more LODs. The paper reviews the pertinent literature, identifies the research issues and defines the research objectives for the project.

Representation and Generalisation in Associative Systems

This paper examines the nature of stimulus representation in associative learning systems. Specifically, it addresses the issue of whether representation is elemental or configural in nature. We use a human causal learning paradigm, employing contingencies more commonly associated with studies of retrospective revaluation. Whereas most models of retrospective revaluation view it as an entirely ...

Adaptive utility and trial aversion

Decision making with adaptive utility provides a generalisation to classical Bayesian decision theory, allowing the creation of a normative theory for decision selection when preferences are initially uncertain. In this paper we address some of the foundational issues of adaptive utility as seen from the perspective of a Bayesian statistician. The implications that such a generalisation has upo...

Comparison of different numerical methods for calculating stress intensity factors in analysis of fractured structures

In this research, an efficient Galerkin Finite Volume Method (GFVM) along with the h–refinement adaptive process and post–processing error estimation analysis is presented for fracture analysis. The adaptive strategy is used to produce more accurate solution with the least computational cost. To investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the developed model, the GFVM is compared with two versio...

Load Balancing and Communication Optimization for Parallel Adaptive Finite Element Methods (Invited Paper)

This paper describes predictive load balancing schemes designed for use with parallel adaptive finite element methods. We provide an overview of data structures suitable for distributed storage of finite element mesh data as well as software designed for mesh adaptation and load balancing. During the course of a parallel computation, processor load imbalances are introduced at adaptive enrichme...
